Updates from the Leigh Academies Trust

Dear Parent / Carer

At these difficult times I wanted to inform you about some exciting developments that have recently taken place regarding our new academy – Leigh Academy Rainham.

Since receiving planning permission for the new academy in Otterham Quay Lane, Leigh Academies Trust (LAT) has been working closely with the contractors and the Department for Education to bring the plans to fruition. I am therefore delighted to tell you that contractors, Bowmer and Kirkland (B+K) were able to begin mobilisation on site last week. B+K will undertake, through the summer, the required groundworks to enable the foundations to be installed, with the intention of erecting the main steel frame this September.

The contractors are very mindful that operation of the site must take into account regulations related to the current COVID-19 crisis. Consequently, a great deal of planning has taken place over the last few weeks and additional resources have been deployed to enable the necessary work to be undertaken safely.

The project is now on schedule to allow the building to be handed over to LAT in July 2021, with the academy opening to founding year students at the start of September 2021.

At this point I wish to recognise my considerable gratitude to Carl Guerin-Hassett for his work as Principal Designate in undertaking much of the initial development work related to the academy. Mr Guerin-Hassett has recently been appointed as Principal of Hundred of Hoo Academy from September 2020 and consequently I am very pleased to tell you that Mrs Alex Millward has accepted the post of Principal Designate to lead Leigh Academy Rainham through the final phases of its creation and its first few years of opening. Mrs Millward is a very experienced senior leader within LAT and will work closely with young people, parents, governors, community leaders and others to deliver an outstanding secondary academy for the town. She has said:

“I am both thrilled and honoured to have been appointed as the Principal of Leigh Academy Rainham. I am very much looking forward to the opportunity to work alongside the local community to make Leigh Academy Rainham a unique setting that both promotes high aspirations and sets high expectations for every young person.

The new Academy is situated in my home town, where I was born, raised and educated, so I am passionately and personally invested in ensuring it will play an instrumental role in shaping the future lives of our young people and transforming the local community.

I very much look forward to working with you, on our journey to excellence.”

Over the coming months Mrs Millward will be sharing with you each stage in the development of the new academy. This will enable you to become more familiar with the innovative curriculum, teaching and learning and the very many opportunities that the academy will offer all students from the outset in September 2021. For those of you that have a particular interest in a place for your daughter or son at the academy, Mrs Millward will be providing opportunities to engage with her later this summer and into the autumn.

We thank you for your continued interest in Leigh Academy Rainham. For additional information please visit the academy website at www.leighacademyrainham.org.uk

Yours sincerely
