Leigh Academy Rainham’s library is a central hub for the academy, equipped with over 5000 books. Students enjoy a range of publications spanning from the 14th Century to contemporary literature. With an extensive selection of fiction and nonfiction resources, students can discover texts that resonate with their personal interests but also support their academic learning across the curriculum.

We take pride in our thoughtfully curated catalogue, which celebrates diversity through literature. Various sections of the library are dedicated to enriching students’ understanding of cultures around the globe. Our collection of foreign language books supports students for whom English is a second language, as well as those eager to learn new languages. Furthermore, we are proud of the wide selection of dyslexia-friendly books featuring enlarged fonts and yellow backgrounds, allowing all students access to exciting narratives. Our selection of LGBTQ+ literature is particularly popular, reflecting our commitment to inclusivity and representation.

Our library is a beacon for students, especially with its fantastic collection of graphic novels, which are becoming increasingly more popular. The latest manga publications are particularly popular. To further enhance knowledge and pleasure reading, the library also stocks a variety of magazines for students to read, allowing them to engage with subjects they are passionate about.

Judging a book (or a library) by its cover

We are fortunate to have such a large space dedicated to the library, allowing us to cater for both educational and social activities.

Library tables and chairs

One half is designed to facilitate lessons, fostering a curiosity for research and inquiry among students. The other half is dedicated to creating a more relaxed environment where students can enjoy the pleasures of reading during social times and library lessons. We have worked to create an inviting atmosphere within the library to support our mission of fostering a love for reading for pleasure. With vibrant rugs, comfortable sofas, decorative bunting and colourful wall stickers, the library offers a colourful and calming atmosphere. It is not uncommon to find the library filled to capacity during social times, as so many students want to visit to read, draw and be creative.

Books are organised by difficulty level so that students can choose books that will both suit their abilities and/or challenge them. Students can access our catalogue through the Oliver Library Website, allowing them to easily identify the appropriate shelves for their reading choices.

Library lessons

Library lessons are held fortnightly, where students are taught key reading skills and pleasure reading is promoted. Students are actively encouraged to explore books that they enjoy. If students for example enjoy looking at picture-heavy books such as Guiness World Record books and football manuals, this is encouraged. Each lesson, students also get to listen to a class reader; some of the books currently read in library lessons include Billionaire Boy by David Walliams, A Series of Unfortunate Events by Daniel Handler and Holes by Louis Sachar.

Student Librarians

In line with our Leigh Learner attributes, we give students the opportunity to improve their leadership skills through working as a student librarian. This is a particularly popular role, with 46 students across the year groups volunteering as a librarian.

They are given the opportunity to take charge of the library and how it is run, from working at the desk loaning books to other students, to making eye-catching displays and generally keeping the library looking lovely and organised. Our student librarians also create a modular magazine which is enjoyed by many students, staff and parents at LAR.
