Course Outline

This qualification offers an engaging programme to support learners who want to pursue a career in dance. This size of qualification allows learners to study related and complementary qualifications alongside it, without duplication of content. It can prepare learners for a range of Apprenticeships in performance-related areas. When taken alongside further Level 3 qualifications, it supports access to a range of higher education courses in the performing arts sector.

Course Content

The two year course is made up of five units, of which two are mandatory and one is external. Mandatory content (50%). External assessment (33%).

Course Assessment

The Level 3 National Extended Certificate in Performance (Dance) has a total number of 5 units completed over two years as follows:

Externally Assessed:
Group Performance Workshop – 120 GLH (Mandatory unit)

Internally Assessed:
Developing Skills and Techniques for Performance – 60 GLH (Mandatory unit)

Optional Units which include:
Jazz Dance Technique – 60 GLH Contemporary Dance Technique – 60 GLH Choreography for Live Performance – 60 GLH

Assessment:
There are three main forms of assessment that you need to be aware of: external, internal and synoptic. Units are assessed using a grading scale of Distinction (D), Merit (M), Pass (P), Near Pass (N) and Unclassified (U). The grade of Near Pass is used for externally-assessed units only. All mandatory and optional units contribute proportionately to the overall qualification grade, for example a unit of 120 GLH will contribute double that of a 60 GLH unit.

Career Opportunity and Future Study

A BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Dance provides students with the skills and knowledge to pursue a variety of careers in the creative industries such as:

  • Dancer: Work in professional dance companies, musical theatre productions, cruise lines, or for artists in music videos and tours.
  • Choreographer: Create and teach dance routines for performances, shows, or media.
  • Performer: Pursue a career in musical theatre, acting, or as a circus performer.
  • Dance Teacher: Teach dance in private studios, community centers, or schools.
  • Pilates/Yoga Instructor: Use knowledge of body movement and fitness to teach specialized exercise classes.
  • Community Arts Worker: Lead and facilitate dance and creative projects in communities.
